Bridal Shower Cake

The end of the year is always the busiest time for me. Family, friends, Christmas ect...

I made this cake for my cousin who got married on December 30th, which is my husband and my anniversary! We've been married for 3 years now. Where does all the time go? But it's been a great 3 years!

I took these photos on my cell phone. They are not the best quality, I wish you could see this one in person. I really loved this cake. The pictures just don't cut it. Good thing I got a new camera for Christmas!!

Strawberry Buttercream -- MMM!

For my first 'vine' cake I think it turned out cute!! I love the daisy's. They were so pretty!
Here's to 2010!
Where I will learn MANY more tips & tricks for cake decorating! I can't wait!!
P.S. I already have my first wedding cake booked!
Congratulations Kara!

The Latest...

My husband had a birthday this month! He kept telling me that he didn't want cake for his birthday. But I had this cake in mind since the day I saw it on kevinandamanda.com so i just had to make it for him. He LOVES Reese's. So I did it for him anyway. He actually LOVED it! I just covered the whole cake in Reese's, made a the best chocolate cake ever recipe from Kevin and Amanda's site then make her buttercream recipe with a 1/4 of a cup of smooth peanut butter mixed in. Yummy!

Sorry the picture is blurry. I'll get some better pictures up soon. I lost my camera so these photos are ones that my friends took.
Then on Wednesday my friend Leeann turned 19. She asked me to make her birthday cake. She said she wanted purple and yellow and the design was up to me.
This is a white cake with cream cheese filling. Buttercream frosting and the dots, bow, '19' & banner are fondant.

Cake Wrecks.com

I am a huge fan of this site. I watch it every day on my following list so I can see the latest wrecks! They CRACK ME UP!! It is so hilarious to look through the many cakes people can actually wreck. And I've noticed most of them are made at your local grocery store.

I admit, maybe I have had a few of those when I first started learning to decorate. I just cannot forgive myself for this one:
The colors don't really flow, the buttercream roses were my first attempt ever, and THAT LINE... The HIDEOUS purple squiggle I just had to do under the poorly written yellow words! But hey, at least I spelled it correctly, right? It's a shame, I know.
The other day as some friends and I were walking through Albertsons I just had to make a stop by the cake section. I laughed as I looked at their 'pine cone' buttercream roses, I laughed even more when I saw their 'pregnant' barbie cake that in reality was way too tall to look normal, but I almost died laughter when I saw this:
Luckily one of my friends had their camera on them, the phone photos just weren't cutting it.
First of all, What kind of turkey is that??? It looks oddly shaped, moldy, over cooked and has a lace up bodice on!

Second, why are there paper tassels coming out of the moldy legs?!?

wouldn't know what to expect when biting into a piece of this cake. I think it would be interesting.
Now, for those of you who have some time on your hands go here to Cake Wrecks and I guarantee you will laugh your butts off!
Have a nice day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Baby Shower Cake

I attended my cousins baby shower this weekend. I made this cake for it:Isn't he cute?!?

I really loved the creativity with this cake. I made the buttons and just fell in love with them. I just cut them out with a small cookie cutter, took the end of my paint brush and made the holes, then shook about some in blue pearl dust, some in green pearl dust and some in just white pearl dust. They turned out adorable. The baby has my heart. He's the cutest little thing I've ever made! I really wish I had done fondant lettering on this. I smeared the BOY letters as I was walking out of my house to go to the shower. I was pretty upset. But Oh well, what can you do. I just fixed it the best I could!

Also, I need to experiment with the wire more that I used to put the moon and stars on. I made more stars than this but a lot of the broke and wouldn't stay on the wire. So I'll have to practice that.

As for the food, I did not make that, but it was AMAZING!

Over all, I was very pleased with this cake.

MMM, Pizza!

My dad's birthday was yesterday. He requested that he either had a pizza cake or a guitar cake. So I decided to go with the pizza. I had SO much fun with this one! All of the toppings are candy!
Then I came up with the idea to make some bread sticks and a cup of dipping sauce.
So I baked my dads favorite cake, Lemon with lemon fruit filling and then I made a cupcake for the cup of sauce and then put some cake batter into a loaf pan so it helped with the long shape of the bread sticks.

My brother works at Papa Murphy's so he brought home a pizza box to top it all off :)The toppings are:
Grated White Chocolate = Cheese
Flattened white gumdrops = onion rings
Yellow gumdrops = pineapple
Fruit Leather cut into circles = pepperoni
Ferrero Rocher Chocolate = Meatballs
Raisinettes = Sausage / Onions
Green swedish fish = anchovies/green onions
For the bread sticks I shaped them a little and then sprinkled some chocolate cake crumbs on top for the look of the seasonings.
My Dad!

I have to admit, I loved this cake! It was so fun to be creative and put it together!
Happy Birthday Dad!

Fondant & Gum Paste

On Saturday I went to the first half of my fondant & gum paste class. We learned a whole bunch of new techniques like how to make carnations, daises and fantasy flowers out of fondant. We also got a new embosser tool in out kit, and a new rolling cutter. They are so nice to have! Then we also learned draping. I LOVE draping, I have seen some gorgeously draped wedding cakes that I love! Draping fondant can be tricky, but I think I did alright for my first time. I'll definitely have to practice. For some reason I can't get this picture to turn, but i put some white pearl dust on my drape to give it a sparkle.

ric-rac boarder

This cake is simple, but I think it is elegant. I had fun doing it :)
This week I have 3 birthday cakes to make! My dad's birthday is tomorrow (His cake will be delicious-in more than one way!) My Mother-in-laws birthday is on Friday (Her cake will be her favorite hobby!) and My sister's best friends daughter, Emma's birthday is on Saturday (Hers is going to be adorable!)
It may take me until the first of next week to get pictures posted, because I'll be so busy, but stay tuned and check them out!

Final Course 3 Cake

Another Course Down! Only one more to go!
I did my final Course 3 cake last night.
I struggled with this one a little bit. On Sunday I made the cakes, I did a yellow and devils food cake mix swirled together with a chocolate cream filling. I think this was one of the best tasting ones yet.
Then on Monday night I had to frost it with buttercream and cover it with fondant. First I had to color the fondant and I was trying to get it dark brown but it wasn't coloring right. I was adding cocoa powder to it to get the brown, and also brown food paste, but still it was Carmel looking. So after adding, red, blue, green and more brown, i finally got something that would work.
I think me and my friend Jen spent an hour or more trying to get the color I wanted. So i rolled out my fondant and went to cover my 9 inch cake, and I got it all on fine, and I was at the last 2 inches of placing the fondant and IT RIPPED! I panicked, i didn't know what to do. I couldn't just take it off because it was already stuck to the buttercream. So I just left it for a minute so i could decide what to do then moved onto my small 6 inch cake. That one turned out well. It was a lot easier, although i did get a small tear in towards the top, but that's what flowers are for :)
So after debating what to do about my tear I found some lime green ribbon, that worked perfectly! I thought the colors matched really well!
Before assembling the cake

52 roses - these took me 9 hours!

During assembly at class

After assembly

My certificate

I think this one is my favorite cake. I think it turned out well for it being my first time covering a round cake. The bottoms around the cake weren't perfect. But I know practice makes perfect :)

New & Old Creations

Now that I have a new cake blog, I wanted to post all the creations I have done in the past. So here they are in order of when I made them (first cake I made, to the most recent cake)

My first practice cake! Not bad for my first
4th of July cupcakes!
The middle
My nephew loved the cupcakes!
My final course 2 cake. It turned out ok... but not my favorite. The horrible squiggly under the words :S
This was my nephew's birthday cake. My first tiered cake

I made this one for a bridal shower. The colors of the wedding were green and teal
This was my final cake for course 2! Also a birthday cake for my brother-in-law who loves BYU!

I made this cake for a friends birthday. I ended up cutting one of my left fingers & had to get 5 stitches. So the cake was partially unfinished.
Chocolate Cake & Vanilla Pudding Trifle

This is my most recent cake that I made in my Course 3 fondant & tiered cakes class.
